Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RECREATIONAL AND CLUB VOLLEYBALL?
Recreational Volleyball
Overview: Recreational leagues are ideal for beginners or those seeking a less competitive
environment.
- Cost: Typically under $300 per season, making it affordable for families.
- Coaching: Often led by volunteer parents or community members.
- Competition Level: Focuses on learning the fundamentals and enjoying the game in a low-
pressure setting. - Time Commitment: Shorter seasons with fewer practices and games, suitable for families
with busy schedules. - Travel: Games and practices are usually local, minimizing travel time and expenses.
Club Volleyball
Overview: Club volleyball offers a more competitive environment for athletes aiming to
advance their skills and compete at higher levels.
- Cost: Ranges from $2,000 to over $8,000 (travel and hotels extra) per season,
depending on the club- Coaching: Staffed by certified coaches with backgrounds in competitive volleyball,
ensuring higher-quality training.- Competition Level: Athletes compete in regional and sometimes national
tournaments, facing higher-level opponents, depending on the team.- Time Commitment: Longer seasons with multiple practices per week and weekend
tournaments, requiring a significant time investment.- Travel: Teams often travel to tournaments, including out-of-state competitions,
which adds to the overall experience and exposure.
What is the time commitment for club volleyball?
Club volleyball requires consistency.
Depending on the team level, athletes can expect:
- multiple practices each week
- weekend tournaments
- travel for certain teams
- strength and conditioning for designated teams
This is not a drop-in environment.
Athletes are expected to:
- be on time
- be prepared
- communicate
- compete
- take ownership o
f their development
Growth does not come from convenience.
It comes from consistency.
WHAT AGE GROUP SHOULD MY ATHLETE PLAY IN?
Arizona Volleyball (Region 55) follows USA Volleyball’s National Junior Age Definition, classifying
players by birth date relative to a July 1 cutoff. To determine your athlete’s age group for the
upcoming season, please refer to the AZ Region's Website HERE.
NOTE - At OVA, we suggest that athletes play with their graduating class.
How are OVA teams structured?
OVA offers five team levels so athletes can be placed in the right environment for their stage of
development.
- Club
A strong starting point for athletes building their foundation in competitive volleyball. - Regional
A step forward in development, consistency, and team play. - Select
A more competitive environment with increased training expectations and limited travel. - Elite
High-level training and competition for athletes ready for more intensity, more accountability,
and more challenge. - Legacy
Our highest team level, built for athletes ready for the greatest commitment, strongest
competition, and highest expectations.
Every level serves a purpose.
The goal is not just to place athletes on a team.
The goal is to place them where they can grow the most.
What is expected from parents?
Parents are a major part of the athlete experience.
We expect parents to:
- support their athlete
- encourage accountability
- trust the coaching process
- respect the team environment
- understand that development takes time
Club volleyball is a commitment for the entire family. The strongest environments are built when
athletes, coaches, and parents all work from the same standard.
HOW IS PLAYING TIME DETERMINED?
Playing time is earned, not guaranteed.
It is based on:
- Effort in practice
- Consistency
- Attitude and coachability
- Performance in competition
- Team needs and matchups
At OVA, our responsibility is to develop athletes and compete as a team.
That means playing time may vary from match to match.
Every athlete will have opportunities to grow — but not every athlete will have equal playing time.
WILL MY ATHLETE PLAY A SPECIFIC POSITION?
At younger ages, athletes will play multiple positions to build a complete skill set.
As athletes get older and more competitive:
- Positions become more defined
- Roles become more specialized
- Expectations increase
Position decisions are based on:
- Team needs
- Athlete strengths
- Long-term development
CAN MY ATHLETE MOVE BETWEEN TEAMS DURING THE SEASON?
Team rosters are set after tryouts and are not typically adjusted during the season.
Our focus is on:
- Team development
- Consistency
- Building chemistry
Athletes are placed where we believe they will grow the most for the full season.
WHAT IF MY ATHLETE OR FAMILY IS FRUSTRATED?
Frustration is part of competitive sports.
Growth comes from how we respond to it.
At OVA, we expect:
- Athletes to communicate with their coach
- Families to support the athlete, not speak for them
- Conversations to be respectful and solution-focused
We are always open to communication —
but it must be handled the right way.
HOW SHOULD COMMUNICATION WORK BETWEEN ATHLETES, PARENTS, AND COACHES?
We follow a development-first communication model:
- Athlete speaks with the coach first
- If needed, a parent can be included
- Communication should be respectful and constructive
This builds:
- Confidence
- Accountability
- Leadership
Parents should not coach from the sidelines or override coaching decisions.
WHAT IS THE EXPECTATION FOR ATTENDANCE?
Attendance is critical.
Athletes are expected to:
- Attend all practices
- Attend all tournaments
- Communicate conflicts in advance
Missed time impacts:
- Individual development
- Team performance
- Playing opportunities
At higher levels, attendance is not optional.
CAN WE MISS TOURNAMENTS OR TRAVEL EVENTS?
Tournament participation is expected.
For Select, Elite, and Legacy teams:
- Travel tournaments are part of the commitment
- Nationals, if earned, is part of the commitment
Choosing to miss events impacts:
- The team
- Lineups
- Overall experience
Families should commit fully before accepting a team.
HOW COMPETITIVE IS OVA?
OVA is a competitive club.
We focus on:
- Development
- Accountability
- Competing at a high level
Winning matters — but development comes first.
We expect athletes to:
- Compete every rep
- Push themselves
- Respond to challenges
This is not a recreational environment.
WHAT IF MY ATHLETE IS NOT STARTING OR PLAYING MUCH?
This is part of competitive sports.
Athletes should:
- Stay engaged
- Continue working
- Ask questions
- Focus on improvement
Playing time can change over the season.
Growth often happens through adversity.
HOW ARE TEAMS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE SEASON?
OVA leadership actively supports:
- Coaches
- Practices
- Team development
We:
- Observe training sessions
- Provide feedback to coaches
- Ensure standards are being met
We are continuously working to improve both athletes and coaches.
WHAT IS THE EXPECTATION FOR SIDELINE BEHAVIOR?
We expect professionalism from everyone.
Parents should:
- Support and encourage
- Not coach from the sidelines
- Respect officials and opponents
Athletes should:
- Support teammates
- Stay engaged
- Represent OVA with integrity
We are building a culture, not just teams.
WHAT DOES “COMMITMENT” REALLY MEAN AT OVA?
Commitment means:
- Showing up consistently
- Being prepared
- Putting the team first
- Following through on the season
This includes:
- Practices
- Tournaments
- Travel
- Communication
Once you commit, you are part of something bigger than yourself.
WHEN WILL PRACTICE SCHEDULES BE RELEASED?
Practice schedules for all age groups will be available a couple of weeks after tryouts are completed.
The OVA team will review all athletes on the team to align the facilities to be used with the location.
NOTE: Our team will do its best to accommodate, but unfortunately, we cannot promise practice
locations.
Where are practices held?
OVA leverages multiple facilities across the West Valley.
This allows us to:
- Support more athletes
- Provide more training opportunities
- Create better access across the West Valley
- Continue building volleyball in our community
Practice locations are assigned after teams are formed and based on overall program needs.
We do our best to align locations well, but practice sites are not guaranteed.
HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR TRYOUTS?
How Should My Athlete Prepare for Club Volleyball Tryouts?
Preparing for club volleyball tryouts is a significant opportunity, and the effort you put in now
can make all the difference later.
To stand out, athletes should sharpen key skills like passing, serving, movement, and decision-
making. We recommend conditioning for agility and explosiveness while also bringing high
energy, effort, and coachability to every session. Coaches pay close attention to attitude, hustle,
and how players respond to instruction, so show your strengths and always compete with
confidence.
What Can We Do Before Tryouts to Get Ready?
We strongly encourage athletes to attend OVA clinics and open gyms. These sessions help athletes:
- Get extra reps in a focused setting
- Meet our coaches and build familiarity
- Learn new skills and drills
- Build friendships and confidence before the season starts
For ages 10-14, these are a great intro to our program.
For ages 15-18, open gyms are available once their school season has concluded.
Note: Varsity athletes still competing in the high school state tournament must wait until their season ends.
What is the OVA Open House/Evaluation, and Why Should We Attend?
OVA hosts three Open House/Evaluation events per age group, leading up to tryouts.
These are structured to reflect the drills and environment of actual tryouts. They allow athletes to:
- Be seen by our coaching staff before tryout day
- Receive informal feedback on their skills
- Gain confidence in the gym environment
- Ask questions and connect with coaches in their age group
We highly recommend attending at least one or two open houses so our coaches can evaluate your athlete before tryouts.
HOW ARE ATHLETES EVALUATED DURING TRYOUTS?
Participating in tryouts is crucial to joining a competitive volleyball club. It's a platform for
coaches to assess players' skills, athleticism, and team compatibility. During tryouts, players can
expect a variety of drills and scrimmage-like scenarios to showcase their abilities in serving,
passing, setting, hitting, and defense. These evaluations assist coaches in forming balanced
teams and identifying areas for improvement for individual players. While tryouts can be
intense, they also offer a valuable opportunity for players to demonstrate their potential and
passion for the sport and learn and grow from the experience, regardless of the outcome.
WHAT HAPPENS THE DAY OF TRYOUTS?
What happens when we arrive?
- Check-in: Go to the check-in table, pick up your athlete's shirt and division sticker, get your number, and enter the gym.
- Documents: Provide the information below to an OVA team member. The process and documents to be filled out are outlined HERE.
- Player Membership
- USAV Medical Release Form
- Photocopy of Birth Certificate, we need this every year
- Bags: Place bags neatly along the outsides of the gym, then get ready to play.
What should my athlete expect during tryouts?
- Skill & Competition Drills: Coaches will guide athletes through various stations, including passing, serving, hitting, defense, and small-group competitions.
- Court Rotation: We use all courts, so players will rotate frequently to be evaluated by different coaches and in various scenarios.
- Team Formation: Coaches select teams after approximately 45-60 minutes of drills. We will start from the highest division first, Legacy, Elite, Select, Regional, and Club.
How will team selections be communicated?
- Coaches will call out the athletes' numbers, grab their bags, and meet in the lobby. The coach will then meet with the families quickly to discuss the team's high-level expectations and understand the commitment level.
- If the athlete chooses not to commit to the team/division, they will be entered into the pool for the next coach.
- This selection process will continue until all teams/divisions are complete.
What will happen after making a team?
- Fill out the uniform sizing and commitment registration documents for the team/division you made and pay the commitment fee online. A link will be sent to the athlete's parent or guardian to complete the team acceptance registration.
- We will have sample uniform sizing onsite.
- If you are paying in full, please see a member of the OVA management team for instructions. We only accept Zelle and checks when paying in full.
